Riding Schools & Centres

If you don’t have your own horses, you can still complete your practical training through a local riding school or equestrian centre—provided it meets our supervision and horse safety standards. This flexible option is ideal for students already taking lessons or those who have access to a reputable centre nearby.

To be approved by ACAC, the centre must offer access to at least three calm, well-educated horses that are suitable for practical handling and riding tasks. These horses don’t need to be the same every time, but each one must be safe, predictable, and appropriate for your level of experience. Horses that are green, reactive, or unsafe for learners will not be approved.

You’ll also need to have a qualified coach or instructor at the centre (as per the Own Horses Criteria) who is happy to supervise your practical training. This person must hold a recognised riding coach qualification, have a current First Aid certificate, and be willing to complete the required horse suitability paperwork. While they’ll be supervising your training sessions, they won’t be assessing your work—your formal assessments will still be conducted by ACAC Educators either in person, by video, or over Zoom.

Many students find they can complete their practical tasks as part of their regular riding lessons they already have, especially when they already have a great relationship with their coach. If you’re already riding at a school, speak with your instructor about supporting your course.

Some riding centres will be happy to take you on work placement as well, where you can learn and be assessed for many of the non-riding skills whilst caring for their horses. The same conditions apply for approvals and supervision.

ADDITIONAL FEES

Please note that any fees charged by the riding centre—such as coaching time, horse use, or facility hire—are your responsibility and are not included in your ACAC course fees.

In many cases, students already working with a coach can complete their practical tasks during regular riding lessons, with no or minimal extra cost. We encourage you to discuss expectations with your coach prior to enrolment so that everyone is clear about availability, supervision, and any associated fees.

If undertaking work placement, this is unpaid work experience for you, and the centre will have to enter into an agreement to provide training experiences as part of the placement.
