Units of Competency

For this qualification to be awarded, you must complete 13 units of competency. Five of these are core units, and the remaining eight are electives. Five electives are set in our course structure and cannot be changed. The remaining three can be chosen from the riding or horse care–related electives listed below.

The core units you will cover within your subjects are:

  • ACMEQU212 Handle horses safely (gateway unit)
  • ACMEQU213 Follow safe work practices in equine industries
  • ACMEQU215 Provide daily care for horses
  • ACMEQU216 Check and treat horses
  • ACMEQU217 Load and unload horses

You will also cover the following elective units:

  • ACMINF302 Follow equine biosecurity and infection control procedures
  • ACMEQU311 Prepare horses for presentation at an event
  • ACMEQU220 Lunge educated horses
  • RGRPSH308 Provide first aid and emergency care for horses or other equines
  • HLTAID011 Provide First Aid – this unit must be completed externally with a registered First Aid provider.
    • You will need to book and pay this provider directly. On completion, simply provide us with your Statement of Attainment so that we can include it in your qualification. This unit is widely available across Australia, often at local training centres, and is quick to complete. We are here to support you with guidance if you are unsure where to book. Most courses are about $120-150.

And you must choose 3 electives from the following:

  • ACMEQU218 Perform horse riding skills at walk, trot and canter
  • ACMEQU219 Develop riding skills for exercising horses (ACMEQU218 is a prerequisite unit so you must select that unit to select this one)
  • ACMEQU309 Carry out basic hoof care procedures
  • ACMGEN303 Assess the welfare status of an animal
  • ACMEQU221 Manage personal health and fitness for working with horses
